Asakusa Kinryuzan
jul.2020
Inspired by Utagawa Hiroshige
This work depicts the present-day Sensoji Temple in the same composition as Hiroshige's "Asakusa Kinryuzan (The Kinryuzan Temple at Asakusa)", No.99 from "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo".
In "Asakusa Kinryuzan" at that time, a wooden five-story pagoda was depicted on the right behind the gate, but it was later burned down many times and collapsed, and has now been relocated to the left in a concrete structure. The Nakamise (shopping street) leading from the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) in the foreground to the back of the picture is now one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan.
