Tama mikaeri no toge
oct.2023
Inspired by Utagawa Hiroshige
This work depicts a view of "Tama New Town", a large bed town in the suburbs of Tokyo, as seen from the "pass of Sakimori mikaeri". Tama New Town was developed by carving out the Tama hills against the backdrop of a serious housing shortage in Tokyo during the period of rapid economic growth. The pass of Sakimori mikaeri is a mountain pass where, in ancient times, soldiers departing for Kyushu are said to have looked back to their hometowns. In this work, a raccoon dog, forced to leave his home by development, looks back to his hometown as well.
STUDIO GHIBLI's animated film "Pom Poko (Heisei-era Raccoon Dog War Ponpoko)" (director: Isao Takahata) is based on this theme of the Tama New Town development, and the raccoon dog depicted in the lower right corner of this work is a reference to a video game character in the animated film.
